SIR reverb is the one of the few good free plugins that I have found, but it's the one plugin that will crash my computer if I'm not careful with it. For a song of my own which I have just started recording I'm considering printing this reverb on the multitrack for the lead vocal & bringing it up on the console when it comes time to mix. I like it better than any of my (digital) outboard reverbs. Or I might turn the warehouse surrounding my studio into 'chamber' late one night and print that. Arran, The more I think about your question, the more it reminds me; Do not get bogged down with 'Plug Fever.'

Having said that, you can compare many, if not most, plug-ins at The long list shows all, or you can specifify your desired format (TDM, RTAS, VST, etc.) to shorten the list. Another source of inexpensive plug-ins (VST, translator required for PT), some good, some not so, is Pluggo. Having got over 'plugin fever' a few years back, i have to say that one is better off sticking to a few great plugins than a million crappy ones less is definitely more in this case all you really need itb is one great compressor, one great eq, one convolution reverb and a couple of toys i pretty much always end up with sonalksis eq and comp, altiverb and motu's inbuilt delay and modulation psp gets an occasional look in that's about it. I like pluggo, but to be honest i haven't used it much in mixing is there any particular plug you're after in the vst world? OK, many thanks for all the replies. Im sensing VST to be a bad idea, particularly when you Pro Tools setup is brand new and has been functioning for a total of about 20hours the words 'Crash your system' do tend to ward one of a subject. Think I may just dish out for the real thing.
Im actually not doing to bad on the plug-in fever thing atm. Possibly because after 15hours of installing and setting up. I still haven’t finished typing in Keys to unlock all the stuff that comes with the Pro Tools bundles. There is allot of good kit in there.
To be perfectly honest there is only one plug-in I feel I am missing and it’s an (shock horror) pitch correction or auto tune plug-in. I know they do horrid things when used to even the slightest excess and that they are in effect cheating. But they have allot of great uses. I have got a version of Melodyne Essentials. This is a very striped down version and I still haven’t played around with it yet.
