I don't see why this couldn't be done. It is not that usual for a boat to have both gas central heating and a solid fuel stove.

You shouldn't have a sealed system controlled by a pressure vessel though. It must be open vented, but on most Alde boilers an open vented reservoir is supplied. Will you pump it through a calorifier too? Controlling the temp of the water when using the stove might be a problem. If it gets too hot, the only way would be to damp down the fire and a small fire needs constant attention. Also, fitting a room stat that controls the CH pump and boiler, could present problems when using the stove for heating. You won't want the pump to shut down with the stove alight, or water may boil in the jacket.

That was my observation when I had one in my barge, which led me to take it out and replace it with an oil burner. A narrow boater was pleased to buy it, though. The one I put in was a Kabola E7 (drip feed), which works fine and was the right choice at the time. However, pressure jet ones (domestic) are more efficient and less fiddly, and now readily available at competitive prices, so that would be my choice today. Although such a burner needs full-time AC, but this can be provided by a small (Maplin 100 W?) dedicated inverter. >I don't see why this couldn't be done. Or even other than gas. >You shouldn't have a sealed system controlled by a pressure vessel >though. It must be open vented, but on most Alde boilers an open >vented reservoir is supplied. If you have (had) a wheel house, you could adopt my solution of a radiator in same with a vented cap as the header tanki.
Di Murrell claims that towards the end of narrow boat carrying, many such had (fabric demountable) wheel houses, as seen more and more today, so go for it! You can then look smugly at those poor folk standing outside (from the waist up if they have, sensibly, got a trad stern) in the cold/wet.
They're not that expensive to have made. >Will you pump it through a calorifier too? If the calorifier is to *provide* to the water in the tank, OK, but again a bit pricey if the heat is from the Alde. Definitely worth it, though, if from the solid fuel stove burning found wood. If the calorifier is to *take* heat from the tank for space heating, not practical IMHO. OTOH, a dedicated heat exchanger for transferring engine heat to the space heating is a good idea. Although you may gulp at the price of the required heat exchanger, unless you can get a special deal.

When the heat is coming from the wood/coal stove, you definitely should turn the circulating pump on to 'all the time' mode to avoid boiling. If it boils, you have the hassle of bleeding the whole system to get it going again. However, you definitely should use a pipe thermostat (very inexpensive; attach to the output hot water pipe as close the Alde as you can get it) when you are heating with gas. If you keep your biggest radiator turned on full during that period as a default heat sink, you will probably be OK. There's more to this heating lark than meet the eye.
