Is the CD you are using something that came with your computer or is it a genuine bootable XP installation CD? What deso the prompt for the password say? Describe what you see when booting on this CD you have. After you enter the password, what does NADA and STUCK mean? If you mean you are getting a STOP error that says something like: SESSION3_INITIALIZATION_FAILED *** STOP: 0x0000006F (0xc0000034, 00000000, 00000000, 00000000) The usual culprit is some (poorly designed) antivirus software - perhaps Avast!, AVG or Avira that has deleted or quarantined necessary XP files such as the Windows Session Manager file: c: windows system32 smss.exe I suppose it could have been really infected and quarantined, but that has never been my experience.
What antivirus software are you running and did you just use it prior to this incident? If the files have been quarantined or deleted, you can replace them from the copies that are already on your HDD, but to do so you must boot your system into the Windows XP Recovery Console. Boot into the Windows Recovery Console using a bootable XP installation CD, or create on a bootable XP Recovery Console CD. There are at least four possibilities (that I know of) for these missing files that result in the SESSION3 or SESSION5 type message: Windows System32 smss.exe. I put the CD in.I press any key to boot from CD, windows setup appears and loads the setup files, then Welcome to setup appears telling me to choose *to set up windows xp now press enter, *to repair a windows xp installation using recovery console, press r., * and to quit setup without installing windows xp, press f3, I select Recover. Then bam recovery console comes and shows 1: C: WINDOWS which windows installation would you like to log onto?
I press 1 and then press enter, it then says, 'type the Administrator password' and there lies the problem I don't have one and when i leave it blank and press enter it says the 'the password is not valid. Please retype the password. How do I repair windows installation if I cant even get pass the admin password in recovery console? I don't want to loose the data at all means possible. Thanks for you advice respectfuly Tom the Allurtech Another case and point is, When it prompts me to enter the administrator password: there is no AStrek(*) by password at all meaning there is no password.

I press enter 3 times and it reboots the system. Okay, it's been over two years, but maybe somebody can help me and Allurtech find potential workarounds to administrator password problems. My problem is a bit different, but from what I've read up on about fixing my own problem, I'm about 99% sure I know what Allurtech's problem is, I just don't know the solution offhand yet. Allurtech says he has an OEM installation of Windows on his computer, which as I understand it means the computer manufacturer put their own super-hidden administrator password on it. This can cause all kinds of problems. If you can boot up the computer using the F8 key -- I suggest you try booting it into Safe Mode With Networking, and use the built-in Administrator account to verify you know the password. Make sure you're connected to the net while in SMWN, then put in ANY Windows XP Pro disk, preferably one with the same service pack as your current installation, and in your case, I'd say, preferably a disk that is NOT the same as your Dell OEM installation disk-- but if it isn't the same service pack, Microsoft may be able to check the net for a better version of Recovery Console.
Then use the procedure described in to install Recovery Console on your computer. Now, as for what you can DO with Recovery Console once it's installed, I'm still puzzling that one out. Please note that for the following procedure: -- Microsoft specifically warns, don't try this on an OEM machine because you don't know the OEM Administrator password. Are you running XP Home? If I were you, I would boot on a Hiren's Boot CD which has it's own registry separate from the one on the afflicted system Then use the remote registry edit program (Registry Editor PE 0.9c) to modify the registry on the XP system so that the Recovery Console does not prompt for a password. You can read about it here: Using the Registry Editor from Hiren's, you need to load the HKLM Software on the REMOTE registry (that would be from the HDD where XP is loaded), make the change, then write the modified registry back out to the HDD (don't forget that part). The 'tricky' part is to be sure you load the HKLM from the file on the HDD and don't try to edit the registry on the Hiren's CD which you won't be able to do anyway since if will not save the change.
It just takes a little practice. Assuming XP is installed on your C drive and knowing the 5 registry files are located in this folder: C: windows system32 config You need to load the SYSTEM file from there and make the adjustment. Once you get the remote SYSTEM file loaded, open the HKLM loaded, navigate here: HKLM SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Setup RecoveryConsole Double click the DWORD SecurityLevel and change the value to 1 1 = don't ask me for the Administrator Password in Recovery Console Be sure to write/save the change, exit the Registry Editor, reboot and test. Here's how to make the Hiren's Boot CD: Here's how: Make yourself a Hiren's Boot CD which you can download from here: The ZIP file is large, so the download will probably take a little while to complete bit it is worth it. Then unzip the download to extract the Hirens.BootCD.ISO file that will be used to create your new bootable CD. Creating a bootable CD from a.ISO file is not the same as just copying the.ISO file to a blank CD. You have to use software that understands how to burn a.ISO file to a CD to create a bootable CD.
